BASIC and APPLIED HIGH PRESSURE BIOLOGY
IVth International Meeting International Group on High Pressure Biology & European Society of Comparative Physiology and Biochemistry on Life in Extreme Environments
La Seyne sur Mer, France – 8-11 juin 1995

High pressure biology has matured over the century since the pioneering investigations of A. Certes and P. Regnard on organisms dredged from the deep ocean and the work of P. Bert on the barometric pressure. The field has become diverse and articulated. Specific interest in the field range widely from the very basic, for example, in marine ecology and in molecular biology, to the very applied, for example, in hyperbaric medicine, in diving or in food science. At the meeting entitled "High Pressure Nervous Syndrome 20 years later" held in Guadeloupe in June 1988, an International Group on High Pressure Biology was formed, in large part through the efforts of J.C. Rostain, with the specific view of attempting to bring together scientists from the various subdivisions of high pressure biology for sharing of information, procedure and perspectives. Much of this ecumenical orientation derived from a prior meeting in 1986 in Toronto, Canada at which an effort was made to facilitate communication between those studying the effects on whole organisms and organ systems.
This book is an outcome of the most recent meeting organized by the International Group on High Pressure Biology during the joint meeting with the European Society of Comparative Physiology and Biochemistry on Life in Extreme Enviromnents held in "La Seyne sur Mer, France" in June of 1995. In keeping with the view of interminpling diverse elements in the field, the major topics considered were :

  1. Life under high pressure
  2. Human and mammals physiology
  3. Animals physiology and microbiology
  4. Enzymes, kinetic, proteins, molecular biology
  5. Nervous system, neurotransmitters and pharmacology
  6. Membrane biophysics, pressure and inert gases
